I don’t get the women-and-age thing. What’s the big deal? Here’s an experiment for you to do and you’ll see just what I mean.
1) Click on pretty much any woman’s Facebook profile. If it’s someone you know all the better, as you’ll be able to see their personal details such as age, date of birth, relationship status etc.
2) Oh…Only you won’t be able to see their date of birth, and in most cases age either, because in most cases it’s not up there. This is deliberate, of course. Most women, for reasons I couldn’t speculate at, think that putting their age up is a crime.
I asked my friend Lucy from the online recruitment software branch to help me out. What’s the problem with age? I said.
She said, are you being thick?
I said, I don’t know, am I?
Yes, she said, you are, very much so.
Lucy then went on to explain that this is the way it’s always been. I said I knew that, of course, it was just that I didn’t understand a few things…one of them being how women don’t want their age known, but are happy to put pictures up on Facebook that really belong in a private collection. She just shrugged at this, then she told me that she certainly doesn’t have any private pics up, and we left it at that (I could sense her getting in one of her signature moods).
Why, then, do men not have the same privilege as women in this respect? When a man says he doesn’t want to reveal his age he is laughed at, but for women apparently it’s normal…
I say forget this silly taboo. Let’s embrace our age, and anyway, you can always tell how old a woman is by looking at her hands.
