Debunking myths: Holding Babies Is Terrifying

Actually, I’ve already made a mistake with that title: I can’t debunk that myth because it TRULY IS terrifying…but what I can do is pass on my baby-holding experience and maybe, just maybe, you might be able to draw some kind of confidence from that.
1) Holding a baby for the first time is the worst, and after that it gets better. Marginally. It really depends on what happens on the first time. Just don’t drop the baby, because I can tell you from experience: they bounce as well as a bowling ball!
2) Holding babies is only terrifying if you are scared to begin with. So, what I find to be good is scaring the wits out of myself with something really nasty before I take on the baby-holding challenge. That way, you are numb to anything after, and the baby-holding is much easier as you can’t be much more scared than when a group of your friends fake-mug you without you knowing anything about it, can you?
3) Make sure you have no sharp objects on you for the baby to grapple with. Things like hairdressing scissors , carving knives and screwdrivers are all obviously a bad idea. This is probably the time when you should be thinking “should I be holding babies if I carry a carving knife around with me?” The answer, if you’re not sure, is NO.
4) You can put the baby down, it won’t break. Just be gentle and I’m sure it will work out. Well, I’m not sure, but I had to say that didn’t I? You’re probably nervous enough already…
